From Needle to Now

From Needle to Now: An Interactive Journey Through 130 Years of Recorded Sound

Duration: 60-90 Minutes | Target Audience: All Ages / Multigenerational

Before streaming, CDs, and even radio, music was something you had to experience live — or play yourself. From Needle to Now explores how recorded sound transformed music from a live event into something people could own, collect, carry, and eventually stream instantly from anywhere in the world.

This engaging multimedia presentation traces the evolution of music technology from Edison’s tinfoil phonograph experiments of the 1870s to today’s streaming era. Audiences will experience playable historical artifacts from across the history of recorded music, including Edison cylinders, shellac 78s, vinyl records, cassettes, 8-tracks, CDs, and early digital music players.

Highlights include:

  • Live demonstrations of antique playback equipment
  • Original Edison phonograph and cylinder recordings
  • A 1920 Victrola playing Enrico Caruso records
  • The story of the “format wars” that shaped music history
  • Audience participation and live polling
  • “Multigenerational Bingo” featuring recognizable music from the last 130 years, played from T.O.M. (Taskmaster of Music Robot)
  • A chance for audience members to hear sound on historical equipment

Blending history, technology, nostalgia, humor, music, and hands-on demonstrations, From Needle to Now is designed for libraries, schools, museums, community groups, and lifelong learners of all ages. The program works especially well as a multigenerational experience, encouraging children, parents, grandparents, and music lovers of all backgrounds to explore how people have listened to music across the last 130 years.
